DRM Receivers

RADIOSCAPE Multimode module-- a number of prototype receivers were showcased at the IFA show in Berlin at the beginning of September 2005. The module is based on the Texas Instruments DSP chip called the TI DRM 3xx which comes either as a DRM only unit (300) or the dual DAB/DRM unit (350). Radioscape are going to use the DRM350 module to allow others to design and build receivers able to receive any combination of DRM, DAB, AM and FM-RDS. The analogue broadcasts will use software defined demodulators rather than  hardware components. The module will have interfaces for keypads, memory and so on to create the now familiar radio with 4 to 10 station memories and ability to scan and store multiplexes. Receivers start appearing each year in time for IFA and IBC but consumers are still waiting for quantities to appear at more affordable prices. Most of the 200 or so units produced by Roberts Radio to date have been snapped up by the broadcasters.

Radio Engineering is currently testing the Himalaya DRM 2009 radio and has just published an Evaluation Report in December 2007. The report will be a listener’s orientated report rather than one filled with decibels and other parameters. Watch out for short reviews in Monitoring Monthly January 2008 edition and the Radio Listeners Guide.

Radio Engineering has also tested the Morphy Richards DRM radio (also being called the Morphy Richards 27024) in some publications. The second edition of the Evaluation Report was released in May 2007 and includes details of the upgrade to firmware version number 1.12. The report is also a listener’s orientated report rather than one filled with decibels and other parameters.
