RADIOSCAPE Multimode module-- a number of prototype receivers were showcased at the IFA show in Berlin at the beginning of September 2005. The module is based on the Texas Instruments DSP chip called the TI DRM 3xx which comes either as a DRM only unit (300) or the dual DAB/DRM unit (350). Radioscape are going to use the DRM350 module to allow others to design and build receivers able to receive any combination of DRM, DAB, AM and FM-RDS. The analogue broadcasts will use software defined demodulators rather than hardware components. The module will have interfaces for keypads, memory and so on to create the now familiar radio with 4 to 10 station memories and ability to scan and store multiplexes. Receivers start appearing each year in time for IFA and IBC but consumers are still waiting for quantities to appear at more affordable prices. Most of the 200 or so units produced by Roberts Radio to date have been snapped up by the broadcasters.
Radio Engineering tested the Himalaya DRM 2009 radio in December 2007 and has published an Evaluation Report . The report will be a listener’s orientated report rather than one filled with decibels and other parameters. Watch out for short reviews in Monitoring Monthly January 2008 edition and the Radio Listeners Guide.
