Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting is slowly emerging in Japan as a new standard. ISDB-T ( there are versions for cable and satellite is designed to cover audio, data and video transmissions within a single standard. ISDB-T has three modes (1 to 3) to cover different requirements with mode 3 have the highest number of OFDM carriers.
The basic granule is an OFDM spectrum slot of 430 kHz. Television broadcasting uses 13 of these segments whereas a digital audio broadcast uses one or three segments. This integrated approach means that an audio program and TV for both fixed and mobile reception could be carried in the same multiplex.
Unlike the European systems that use QAM the Japanese system can also use QPSK and BPSK for more robust transmissions.
